Imo Joins Rest Of The World To Mark 2024 "Olympic Day Walk"

The Chairman Imo State Sports Commission, Hon Prince Sir Eleazar Onyewuchi Ogbonna "Ambassador" and the Commissioner for Sports, Hon Obinna Evarestus Onyeocha with the state Director of Sports, Mrs Patricia Ezeji were on Saturday June 30th, 2024 joined by the Nigerian Olympic Committee NOC, representative, Dr Ray Opara to lead Imolites in celebration of this year's "Olympic Day Walk".


Reacting to the media, the Sports Commission Boss, Amb Ogbonna described Imo State as bedrock for grooming champions in sports and could not be left out in this year's "Olympic Day Walk".


He said moving forward that he and the sports Commissioner is working closely to ensure that Imo born athletes are returned to represent their father land by creating programmes and platforms that will also help develop grassroots sports.


Also, the Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon Onyeocha reiterated the state's resolve to return their athletes from other states and taking developmental measures that can help catapult sports back to the pinnacle in the state.


In his own Speech, the NOC representative, Dr Opara commended the state for taking part although it started late because of the clean up exercise.


He explained that the significance of this year's Olympic Day Walk celebration is the preparations ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France which coincidentally is the home country of the founder of Olympics, Pierre De Cubertine.


He stressed that Olympics is all about participating, the joy in participation, raising the interest and affecting our health positively.


In his global message, the International Olympic Committee, IOC President, Thomas Bach said among many others that Olympic builds bridge and brings people together in peace and solidarity.

The massage further continued that in Paris the athletes win inspire us with their achievements, they will inspire the world by living our Olympic motto; Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together.
