Fear Grips FUTO Residents, Environs Over Incessant Kidnapping, As Varsity Mgt Issues Movement Advisory To Students

The residents of Federal University of Technology, Owerri and it's environs are reportedly leaving in palpable fear over the continued report of kidnapping in the area.

Recall that recently a video and voice note of kidnap incident which went viral on social media that occurred along FUTO - Obinze road attracted lots of reactions by residents of the affected areas including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo and Obinze expressing their fear.

They have been several reports of kidnapping attempts and incidents in FUTO host communities which has adversely affected business activities in the area including security of the residents and their visitors.

Recently the Nigerian Police, Imo state Command under the guidance of CP Abokin Danjuma following distress calls from affected victims combed the bush and environs of FUTO and urged citizens to go about their normal duties but the most recent incident continues to put fear and worry into the citizens.

Meanwhile, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, has issued a security alert following recent kidnappings near the university's main gate.

In a statement from the office of the school’s registrar, Chiedozie Uba, on Tuesday, September 10, the university management expressed concern over the spate of kidnapping incidents along the Obinze-Ihiagwa Road, which occur early in the morning and late in the evening.

The statement reads, “Management of the University has noted recent kidnapping incidents on the Obinze-Ihlagwa Road, very close to the University Main gate.

“Management also noted that these incidents happen very early in the morning and late in the evening.”

To protect students, the university advised them to limit their movements outside the campus during specific hours.

"Students are directed to shun unnecessary movements out/into the University between 6.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. to avoid falling victim to the activities of these hoodlums," the management stated.

The university further urged students to remain vigilant and to keep their families informed of their whereabouts. "Students are also enjoined to be vigilant and inform their parents, guardians or any significant other of their movements," the statement added.

The directives, aimed at enhancing student safety, have been issued for immediate compliance.
