Cultural & Food Event Organised by Igbo Legacy in Collaboration with Fexdora Agro Devet Union

Event Overview











 On 2nd of December 2023, a vibrant cultural and food festival was held at Villae Marie Wetheral Road Owerri Imo State, drawing a large crowd eager to experience a blend of local traditions, music, and cuisine. The event aimed to celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the Igbos while showcasing traditional and modern culinary delights. It was organized by Igbo Legacy  in conjunction with Fexdora Agro Development Union. The event  beautifully featured local vendors, traditional music, folk  tales, dancers, and chefs, providing a sensory feast of sights, sounds, and flavours. The colourful event was chairmaned by Mr Nnamdi Obilam, a lover of culture and Agric products. In attendance was also Mr Anthony  Ajuruchi the Imo State  Cordinator  of Nigeria  Export Promotion  Council ( NEPC), Dr Ify who is the Imo State Cordinator  of Small and Medium  Enterprises  Development  Agency  of Nigeria (SMEDAN),  Mrs Precious  Mbamara represented the State Cordinator  Imo State Raw Materials  , Research and Development   Council(RMRDC). We also had in attendance , State members of Igbo Legacy, including  Chief Chris and Engr Chidi, the state Cordinator.  Traditional  Rulers and lovers of culture from different parts of the state graced the occasion. 


*Cultural Highlights* The event kicked off with a keynote address from the International  Cordinator  of Igbo Legacy  Sir Kenny Uzoma and presented by Engr Chidi Obikara, the Imo State Cordinator  of Igbo Legacy.

Presenting the keynote address in our prestigious  Igbo language,  we were all reminded of the wealth in culture  and diversity  of the Igbo race. It is our obligation to preserve  our identity.  The National  Co-ordinator  of Fexdora  Agro Development  Union. Mrs Ngozi Nwadike,  in a welcome address  appreciated  all attendees  and assured them of a tasteful  event 


We had a colourful parade, match past, and several  activities featuring performers dressed in traditional attire from various corporative bodies in Fexdora. Each group displayed unique customs and rituals, from traditional dances to musical performances using native instruments. 


Highlights included:


Traditional Dance Performances: 


We had friendly and entertaining dance competitions  among the corporative bodies present. Art and Culture group, which represented  Igbo Legacy, came first, followed  by Chisomaga  Corporative  society  , while Youth Must work corporative  came third.  Other groups showcased their heritage through performances such as the Ncho ( traditional  Igbo brain game), dressing  competitions, folktales highlighting the rich history, and cultural significance behind these art forms.


Music: Live music filled the air, with performances ranging from folk to contemporary styles, providing a soundtrack to the vibrant atmosphere. The joyful  and traditional  dance steps by the attendees were mind soothing. Their joy knew no bounds.


The heart of the event was undoubtedly the food. Local chefs and food vendors offered a wide array of dishes, each representing the rich culinary traditions of different regions. From street food to gourmet meals, attendees had a chance to sample a variety of flavours.


Highlights included:


Signature Dishes: Food stands offered traditional dishes such as nkwobi and palm wine, akidi, ukwa, oha soup, roasted yam showcasing authentic flavors . The attendees witnessed a hilarious  food  competition, winners were pronounced using yardstick such as traditional  setting and  the use of locally sourced ingredients, emphasizing sustainability and freshness.


 The competitors demonstrated and explained the history and techniques behind their dishes. These sessions were highly interactive, giving attendees a chance to learn and ask questions.

There was engagement and interaction. Beyond performances and food, the event encouraged active participation through interactive workshops and activities. Attendees could engage in  food tasting sessions and even take part in dance and live music. This hands-on approach enhanced the cultural immersion and left a lasting impression on participants.


The 14 coperative  bodies were in attendance with their harvest and farm produce, including vegetables, tubers ,oil crops, nuts, processed food items, etcetera. 


Conclusion The cultural and food event was a resounding success, offering a rich tapestry of heritage, art, and culinary delights. It not only provided entertainment but also educated attendees about Igbo cultural diversity and culinary traditions. The event fostered a sense of community and inclusivity, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.


This festival was a celebration of culture in its many forms, with food as a central theme, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
