Talents Discovered, As Oru West Academic & School Sports Competition Ends

  

Oru West Council headquarter Mgbidi, was agog on thursday April 3, 2025, as students from all the Secondary Schools in Oru West Local Government Area, trooped en masse to witness

the 2025 Academic and Sports competitions organized by Oru West LGA in conjunction with  Secondary Education Management Board Orlu zone II for Secondary Schools in the Local Government.

The event ended in grand style,with Umuokpara Secondary School Mgbidi and Ohakpu Secondary Commercial School winning the debate and quiz competitions respectively.

Addressing the mammoth crowd at the event,the Zonal Director Secondary Education Management Board, Orlu Zone II, Dr Mrs Evelyn Ezuruigbo,said that education is the largest industry in Imo,adding that the governor distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma has continued to make education his priority and thanked him for the good gesture.

The Director disclosed that the students proved their reading capabilities in the competition and excelled in sports,adding that talents were discovered.

She lauded the Chairman of Oru West LGA,Engr Ikenna Adikibe,and revealed that this is the first time such competition is being organized in Orlu zone and wished the competition becomes a yearly event.

She further hinted that Secondary Education Management Board Orlu Zone II, was established in 2008 with the responsibility of monitoring teaching and learning in the area,but regretted that some challenges have  made the objective of the board an upheaval task.

She said that some of the challenges facing the Board includes:lack of  office accomodation and furniture,no vehicle for monitoring exercise,old and leaking roof amongst others,stressing that the deplorable  condition of the office affects the workers psychologically.

She called on stakeholders and good spirited individuals to come to their rescue,stressing that Government cannot do it alone.

Earlier in his remarks,the Chairman of the Local Government,Engr Adikaibe who was represented by the Vice Chairman,Hon Obi Casmir appreciated the students for their efforts in the Academic and sports competition.

Lending his voice,the Chairman of the occasion Dr Obioma Okoli,appreciated the organisers of the occasion and promised to make the event a succesfull one.

The event witnessed a debate between Umuokpara Secondary School Mgbidi and Umuorji Girls Secondary Mgbidi,with the topic:Education is a scam.Other activities include match-past by all the secondary schools,cultural dance,art exhibition amongst others.

The climax of the event was the unveiling of the magazine,which was done by the Chairman of the event with the support of others.

The Chairman,Dr Obioma Okoli launched the magazine with the sum of five hundred thousand naira,while others seemingly supported the event.

Awards were presented to some well deserving individuals by the Executive Secretary Secondary Education Management Board Imo State,Dame Augustina Azubuike,who was  represented by Lady Kamalu Blessing .

The students  were full of enthusiasm and enveloped with joy not minding the scorching sun.

Results of all the events ranging from debates,quiz competition,drama,art exhibition,football, match past, track events,essay writing competition amongst others were all released at the end of the event.
